Titled ‘Aros yn y waenganui’, translated as ‘Staying in the in-between’, integrating Te Reo Māori ‘Waenganui’ (In-between, Middle) and the Welsh language ‘Aros yn y’ (Staying in the …). The work is the resolution to the series titled ‘Wāhine Mytholeg’ from Āhua Collective Exhibition: An Exploration of Identity. The joining of two seemingly contrasting cultures from the artist’s whakapapa, follows their own personal journey with duality. The process of acknowledging previous struggles with identity with the belief that we either belong in one world or the other. ‘Aros yn y waenganui’ is an ode to the bi-cultural rangatahi in Aotearoa that we can co-exist. Continuing the practice of storytelling created by our tīpuna, to create our own stories that will be read for future generations to come.
