'Wine and Te Ao Māori' Article written by Kathleen Willcox featured in Full Pour Magazine (Summer 2025)
Illustrations featured in Full Pour Magazine piece by Kathleen Willcox 'Wine and Te Ao Māori'. This piece reflects on how wineries in Aotearoa are utilising kaupapa Māori into their harvest and prioritise understanding turangawaewae.
While it's encouraging to read this, the piece reflects on the beginnings of colonialism and it's devastating impact that still exists today. It raises important questions about the sincerity of businesses adopting Māori practices—whether their intentions stem from a genuine commitment to kaitiakitanga, or if it’s simply a strategy to profit from tangata whenua.
As Richelle Ixney (Te Tauihu) states: "I'm less comfortable when wineries misappropriate and use Māori as a marketing tool. There is a way to do it with respect, and that is in engaging with the community and land. And there is a way to not do it with respect".
