Queer History Month 2024 Poster for Kawe Mahara Queer Archives Aotearoa (June 2023)
An illustration commission I made with Kawe Mahara Queer Archives Aotearoa (@kawemahara) for their first hui to celebrate Aotearoa’s first ever Queer History Month Pūmahara Ia Te Wā in July 2024.
Repost by Kawe Mahara of event below:
He kitenga kanohi, he hokinga mahara. He kawenga mahara, he hāpori kitea.
A familiar face stirs one’s memories. A collection of memories is a community seen.

Aotearoa is the twentieth country on the International Committee on LGTBQ+ History Months to dedicate a month to sharing our queer histories. Kawe Mahara Queer Archives Aotearoa and the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa are dedicating the month of Hōngongoi July to mark the passing of the Homosexual Law Reform Act on 9 July 1986.
We would love your help spreading the word about the month and our hui taumata, to inspire organisations, libraries, community groups and school community groups to celebrate local queer histories and share kōrero about how we can keep Aotearoa’s queer histories alive.
