Event Information by Stuff, below:

To welcome in the new year and to celebrate the end of our 2022 Matariki Artist Wānanga, Basement Theatre are hosting ELECTRIC TANIWHA - a Matariki party for our peoples.

Featuring high quality experimental music by some of our most exciting next-gen Māori artists, it’s gonna be a super special night - think beautiful sounds, twinkly lights, mouth-watering kai and the best company ever.

The evening is free to attend and will be a mix of ticketed (only a handful of tickets are available so you must register!) and open admission experiences.

ELECTRIC TANIWHA LINEUP
6:30: Basement bar opens for drinks and pre-show hangs

7pm-8pm: SECRET MUSICAL GUEST
A Māori pop sensation will perform waiata from her reo rangatira project, including those from her recently released, critically-acclaimed album. This is ahead of the first ever official performance of her new album the following night for the Matariki holiday, making our showing super coveted (and super secret!). Expect stripped back renditions of these exquisite waiata, which are imbued with mātauranga gifted from her kuia. This is an intimate, sit-down experience in our main theatre space.

8pm: Enjoy some free hāngi on the Slab, put together by UnderGround Hāngī

8:50pm-9:30pm: TE KAHUREREMOA (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Tūwharetoa)
Te Kahureremoa Taumata will delight us with a multidisciplinary reo-rua sound experience that will include tāonga pūoro, loop machine, beats and acoustic guitar. She's witchy AND funny, and if we’re lucky she’ll share a pūrakau or two as well. Travelling all the way from Pōneke with no intentions to ever play in Tāmaki again (just joking), don’t miss out on this rare opportunity. This will also be an intimate sit-down experience, and you must come early coz there’ll be free hāngi from 8pm.

9:30pm: The amazing NATIVEBUSH (Ngāti Pikiao/Ngāpuhi) will be pumping bangers in the bar from 9:30pm onwards - this part of the evening is open admission so there’s no need to register and you can tell all your mete to come on down and join us for party times.

Electric Taniwha is supported by the Local Activation Fund Programme, administered by Auckland Unlimited on behalf of the New Zealand Government.

Each year, Matariki is acknowledged at Basement Theatre with an artist wānanga and a 5x5 metre original commemorative artwork hung above Basement Theatre designed by a Māori visual artist. This year’s banner designed by MsMeemo (Kai Tahu, Kahungunu, Waikato-Tainui, Tuhoe) is an eye-catching intergalactic piece that will be displayed from 20 June to 3 July.
